It has been one month since two earthquakes killed over 50,000 people. A further 100,000 were injured following the two powerful earthquakes.

The first, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake, struck in the early hours of 6 February near the city of Gaziantep, followed hours later by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake that hit around 80 miles away in the Elbistan district. The earthquakes are estimated to have directly impacted 26 million people across Türkiye (Turkey) and Syria.

Further earthquakes occurred on February 20 and February 27. The 20 February earthquake was 6.4 in magnitude and is believed to have killed eight people and injured 300. There have been further aftershocks in the hours that followed, some of a significant size.

The earthquake has destroyed thousands of people’s homes in Türkiye (Turkey) and Syria, while hospitals, roads and bridges have been badly damaged. The impacts were so large that tremors were reported as far away as Cyprus, Lebanon, Iraq and Jordan.

Currently 3,000 people have been accommodated in temporary shelter and a further 380,000 in schools and education facilities.

In Türkiye (Turkey), over 35,000 are reported to have died, and in Syria it is believed that more than 5,000 have died.

Extensive damage has been reported in Türkiye (Turkey), with buildings collapsing in cities including Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kahramanmaras, Kilis, Matalya, Osmaniye and Sanliurfa.

In Syria, there are reports of collapsed buildings in the Aleppo, Idlib, Lattakia, and Hamma governorates, and extensive damage in rural Damascus.
